The Savage Family Reunion
By Radford Savage (August 1995)

The Savage Family Reunion
Is why we’re here this year
So that we can get to know each other
Coming from far and near
Yet some of us live in this city
And don’t know each other at all
It’s not the children’s fault
For the parents have this call

The Savage Family Reunion
Is one we should always attend
Because if we don’t our children
May date a relative or a friend
And for something like this to happen
It would be sad, very sad indeed
So I urge you think on this
And please, please take heed

The Reunion dates back to Brother Sam
Say America---Here I am…I am…I am
For Sister Nancy I don’t have a last name
But I’m sure their ideas
Were basically, basically the same
Our USA beginning started in 1837
And I hope it will last
Until we’re all called home to Heaven
So come on “U” Savages
And let us have a good time
I sincerely thank you all
For listening to this Savage rhyme

THE BLACK FAMILY PLEDGE

By: Dr. Maya Angelo

BECAUSE we have forgotten our ancestors,
our children no longer give us honor.

BECAUSE we have lost the path our ancestors cleared
kneeling in perilous undergrowth,
our children cannot find their way.

BECAUSE we have banished the God of our ancestors,
our children cannot pray.

BECAUSE the old wails of our ancestors have faded beyond our hearing,
our children cannot hear us crying.

BECAUSE we have abandoned our wisdom of mothering and fathering,
our befuddled children give birth to children
they neither want nor understand.

BECAUSE we have forgotten how to love, the adversary is within our
gates, an holds us up to the mirror of the world shouting,
"Regard the loveless"

Therefore we pledge to:

Bind ourselves to one another.

To embrace our lowlies.

To keep company with our loneliest.

To educate our illiterate.
To feed our starving.

To clothe our ragged.

To do all good thing, knowing that we are more than keepers of our brothers and sisters.

We ARE our brothers and sisters.
